Contributed to the programming and construction of a 5-axis robotic arm for the University of Victoria's 2023 competition rover. The arm handled the dexterity tasks the rover's drive system could not: flipping switches, turning knobs, and manipulating equipment at a mock field site, while carrying a maximum payload of 2.0 kg.
Five axes was a deliberate constraint rather than a limitation. Dropping the sixth degree of freedom cut mass and mechanical complexity at the cost of full end-effector orientation control, an acceptable trade when the task list is dominated by switches and knobs that only need approach from a known direction.
