Custom Built Equipment

Building the tools rather than buying them. Both of these started the same way: a process I wanted access to, a piece of equipment priced well out of reach, and enough understanding of the underlying chemistry or physics to work out what the machine actually needs to do.

A vacuum former built from a shop vacuum and an oven, and a copper electroplating setup for 3D printed parts. The constraint is the point. Working out which parts of a commercial machine are essential and which are convenience is a faster way to understand a process than operating one that already works.

Tools: Electrodeposition and surface preparation chemistry, thermoforming, material science, fabrication, lab safety and chemical handling.
